Keyboard Mounting Styles

What does a mechanical keyboard mounting style mean?

A custom mechanical keyboard mounting style refers to the method by which the mechanical switches are attached or mounted to the keyboard's PCB (printed circuit board) or the keyboard's case. Different mounting styles can significantly affect the typing experience, feel, and sound of the keyboard.

Here are some common custom mechanical keyboard mounting styles:

1. Plate-mounted: In this style, the switches are mounted to a separate metal or plastic plate, which is then attached to the PCB.

2. Top-mounted: Top-mounted keyboards use screws or other fasteners to secure the PCB and plate (if present) to the top part of the case.

3. Tray-mounted: Tray-mounted keyboards have the PCB and plate (if used) sitting inside a tray-like enclosure in the case, and they are typically secured with screws or tabs.

4. Gasket-mounted: Gasket mounting uses rubber or silicone gaskets between the plate and the case.

5. Integrated plate: Some custom keyboards have an integrated plate design where the plate is an integral part of the case, usually made from the same material.

6. Sandwich-mounted: A sandwich mount is where screws go fully through the bottom housing, plate, and top housing of the keyboard, holding the plate like the middle of a sandwich.

7. Burger-mounted: Burger mount uses an O-ring to hold the plate in place before screwing the plate in like a top mount.

8. PCB-mounted: PCB mount, also known as Plateless, is an installation without a plate. This puts pressure directly on the circuit board.

9. Isolated-mount: An Isolated mount uses a rubber sheet cut to the size as designed, attached to the upper and lower cases to clamp the plate in the middle

Custom mechanical keyboards have gained popularity among enthusiasts as they allow users to choose from various mounting styles, switch types, keycap sets, and case materials, tailoring the keyboard to their preferences for a unique typing experience. Each mounting style offers distinct characteristics that appeal to different users based on their typing preferences and typing feel preferences.

Which mounting style is best?

The "best" mounting style for a custom mechanical keyboard is subjective and depends on individual preferences and typing habits. Each mounting style has its own unique characteristics that cater to different user preferences. Some people might prefer a firm and rigid typing feel, while others may prefer a softer and more cushioned experience.

Here are some considerations for different mounting styles:

1. Plate-mounted: Provides a firm and sturdy typing feel. It can enhance the typing experience for those who prefer a more solid and precise keypress. The plate material, such as aluminum or stainless steel, can also influence the sound profile of the keyboard.

2. Top-mounted: Provides a balanced typing experience that falls between plate-mounted and PCB-mounted. It can be a good choice for users who want a middle-ground feel.

3. Tray-mounted: Offers a unique and often more pronounced typing feel due to the enclosure of the PCB and plate within the tray-like case.

4. Gasket-mounted: Delivers a soft and cushioned typing experience, dampening the keypress for a smoother feel.

5. Integrated plate: Provides a seamless design and often combines the characteristics of the case material with the typing feel.

6. Sandwich-mounted: This mounting method provides stability and rigidity to the switches and helps in evenly distributing the typing force across the keyboard.

7. Burger-mounted: This method gives a softer and quieter touch and sound

8. PCB-mounted: It provides a very soft and flexible touch & the sound is soft and clear.

9. Isolated-mount: Gives a softer and quieter touch and sound than fixing the plate with a nut.

Ultimately, the "best" mounting style is a matter of personal preference. It's recommended to try out different mounting styles if possible or do some research on the specific characteristics of each style to determine which one might suit you best. Additionally, key switches and keycaps can also influence the overall typing experience, so those factors should be taken into account when building or choosing a custom mechanical keyboard.
